For almost 20 years, I’ve been doing stand-up under the name Cory Gee — and in that time, I’ve pretty much worked every kind of room there is.

I’ve performed at family campgrounds where the crowd ranges from age 8 to 80, emceed fundraisers where keeping the energy up (and the program on schedule) is half the job, and worked corporate audiences who just want a clean, sharp set that doesn’t make anyone in HR nervous. That range matters — a comedian who can only do one type of room is a risk. I’m not that.

One result I’m proud of: I helped a nonprofit triple their paddle raise total at a fundraising event. That wasn’t an accident — reading a room and knowing exactly how to build energy at the right moment is the same skill whether I’m working a crowd for laughs or working a crowd toward opening their wallets for a cause.
